Masiphumelele Township is situated on the Old Kommetjie Road between Kommetjie and Noordhoek.
Masi as it is commonly known comprises mostly Xhosa speaking residents and is a small community.
Visitors can expect to be fascinated by the vibrancy of township life which is relected in the streets and the faces of the people of Masiphumelele. Best visited on a Township bike tour or combined with a photographic tour to visit the shacks and the shipwrecks of the Cape Peninsula.
A visit to this pulsating township will leave you feeling both inspired and compassionate!
Masiphumelele was initially established in the early 1980’s by migrant workers from the Eastern Cape, most of whom had found work in the Fish Hoek Valley. Masiphumelele (formerly called Site 5) boomed with development in the early 1990’s and is now home to nearly 30 000 residents.
Masiphumelele means “we will succeed” in Xhosa and visitors can experience many of the success stories and development programmes that have been established in the informal settlement. Masi (as it is commonly known) is an excellent example of determination, self-help and the settlement has a strong sense of community.
