Join an adventure of photography and food in the historic and picturesque Bo-Kaap. Complete a 2 hour walking tour with your personal photocoach around the colourful streets of the Bo-Kaap before you're enticed into the kitchen to cook a traditional Cape Malay meal.
This area in central Cape Town is known for it's brightly coloured houses and cobbled streets and is situated at the foot of Signal Hill. This is the spiritual home of the Cape's Muslim community. There are many Muslim Kramats (shrines) and beautiful Mosques including the first Muslim Mosque in South Africa. It is however a blend of cultures.
Many of the residents are direct descendants of slaves from Malaysia, Indonesia & various African countries who were imported to the Cape of Good Hope by the Dutch in the 16th & 17th Century. As such the area is often called the Cape Malay Quarter. Cape Malay Cuisine is unique and very popular as it makes use of aromatic spices and herbs. Over 300 years ago the 'Malay Slaves' brought the fragrance & flavour to the Cape and to their foods which combine fruit, vegetables and meat with the spices.
Embark on a 2 hour walking tour with your own personal Photocoach round the Bo-Kaap. You will photograph the vibrant colourful street scenes, and enjoy panoramic views of Table Mountain, Cape Town and Table Bay.
Learn how to improve the composition of your photographs, how to control depth of field and the shutter speed of your camera and how a polarizing filter will add punch to your photographs, while photographing the vibrant and colourful street scenes, learning more about the history and Cape Malay culture in Cape Town…
...then the aromatic spices in the air lead us to the kitchen, where you learn to make traditional Cape Malay chicken curry (vegetarian options available), roll roti flat bread, fold samosas and learn the secret ingredient of sambal to compliment this flavourful meal in one of the local homes in Bo-Kaap.
