Best Bakeries on the Cape Point Route

We believe there is a food revolution happening  with a strong focus of freshly made,  freshly sourced products and we think it can be measured in bread!  No more white, pre-sliced white stuff down here!  We are converts to the addictive pleasures of traditional and artisan breads. We are fans of “home-made” cakes, cookies, breads, pastries and pies!

Bakeries produce many magical things and choosing our list of best bakeries in the south peninsula is no easy task.  Is the definition based on the classic French patisserie that turns out the perfect croissant or is it based on the decadent layered cake with unique flavours and layered twists that one orders for a special occasion? We are not differentiating between bakery versus deli  and many spots are actually both!

We reckon the following bakeries will appeal to even the least food-oriented visitors to the Cape Point Route.  These bakeries will draw you in with the smell of freshly baked loaves, eye-catching, sumptuous or self-indulgent pastries and tarts.  A big thanks to our Twitterati community who made suggestions for this article! (Apologies to those who suggested other fabulous bakeries out of the Cape Point Route area, which we acknowledge for their brilliance but who are not in the scope of this article! Keep baking!)

Foodbarn deli Noordhoek
Address:  Cellars Building, Noordhoek Farm Village
Tel: 021 7891390
Hours:  Monday – Sunday. 08h00 – 17h00

As winners of the 2011 Best Bakery in the Western Cape award at the annual Eat In Awards.. the Foodbarn Deli and Bakery is a must when visiting the south peninsula.  You’ll bump into local, tourists and passers-by, in a warm relaxed setting. The best sellers without a doubt are the Ciabatta breads, the croissants (almond, chocolate and Pain au raisin) and of course the pies .. which fly out of the deli as fast as bird on the wing.  Cakes, Apple crumble, milk tarts are other perennial favourites- all of which can also be ordered for special occasions.

The Good Bakery: Muizenberg
Address : 12 & 13 Milner Road, Muizenberg
Tel: 074 174 5554
Hours:  Mon – Friday 07h00 –14h00 Saturdays: 07h30 – 14:30

Baking is an art – it takes a lot of preparation, ordering the right ingredients (organic and local) to get perfectly rising yeasts.  They say there is a mad genius in baking bread but it is evident that Martin Moessmer and Mitchell Penning have that flair.  You’ll find them near the railway station in Muizenberg in a garage outlet. There’s no signage or menus (not even a blackboard!) … just a garage, a table in the front with the day’s wares and an open plan “kitchen” behind that produces muffins, health breads, rye breads, ciabattas, foccacias, berry tarts, butternut pies and almost anything that can be baked. There is an unhurried feel, and what’s great to know is the Good Bakers deliver (initially in the local ‘hood on their bicycles!) but seems distribution is improving to further afield!

Olympia Café and Bakery: Kalk Bay
134 Main Road, Kalk Bay
Tel: 021 788 6398
Hours: Monday –Sunday 07h00 – 19h00

Olympia Cafe is an old time favourite in the south peninsula, and one of Cape Town’s best known ocean side cafes. We have to recommend THE bakery which is around the corner from the cafe – tucked into an unpretentious doorway. Needless to say the bakery supplies the cafe counters with melt in the mouth delights. We recommend popping into the bakery itself which supplies great coffee, breads, pastries, danishes to their customers. The do fantastic multigrain, seed loaf, rye bread and potato bread and we confess to being big fans of the beetroot & butternut ciabatta. The lemon tarts are also fantastic!

Knead, Muizenberg
Address: Corner of Clarendon and Beach road, Muizenberg
Tel: 021 788 2909
Hours: Monday to Sunday 08h00 – 17h00

Knead has expanded from Muizenberg to other outlets around Cape Town but we still love having a good surfing beach as the backdrop.  Hot artisan breads made on-site with a view of the ocean should not be dismissed! They bake bread, pastries and confectionary on-site every day using traditional techniques, no preservatives or premixes. They have classic continental breads and rolls which you can buy directly or just sit down and eat with one of the restaurant meals and your views. There’s a fabulous range of handmade confectionary, sweet and savoury pastries, pies, cookies, muffins and even cupcakes! The almond croissants are to die for, especially if they are hot out of the oven!

Compass Bakery: Kommetjie
Address: Heron Park, Kommetjie Road
Tel: 021 783 4102
Hours: Monday-Friday 08h00- 17h00; Saturday – Sunday 09h00 – 15h00. Public Holidays 09h00- 14h00

Compass Bakery have the claim to fame that they supply Woolworths with a large variety of their baked goods. What began as the Kommetjie Continental Bakery, they are most famous for their 77 ranges of biscuits! However they also produce baked puddings, brownies, desserts, muffins, gateaux, cup-cakes, Swiss Rolls, lamingtons, bar cakes, ring cakes, mince pies. The good news with all this production is that they have a factory outlet, locally known as the “neighbourhood bakery” where they sell daily specials in the store and offer factory price baked goods that were “rejects” or a result of overproduction – all of which are clearly marked with a sell-by date!

C’est La Vie: Kalk Bay
Address: 20 Main Road, Kalk Bay
Tel:  083 676 7430
Hours:  Weds – Sunday 07h30 – 15h30

There is “just-something” about having artisanal breads made onsite and eaten fresh with your steaming mug of cappucino. This small, owner run establishment was tucked away down one of Kalk Bay’s cobbled alleys but moved recently to the Main Road in Kalk Bay. The place is loaded with a passion. You can almost feel the relationship between hand and dough! If you eat-in the menus are written on wooden boards and served in handmade ceramic cups and it does feel slightly Parisian.  Fresh baguettes are a speciality and it is not uncommon to see the locals arrive with a basket to take artisanal freshly baked breads from the shelves (croissants, ciabattas, rye bread and baguettes of course) Brownies, cheese sticks, olive/herb sticks. Your breads will be wrapped in brown kraft paper and tied with a piece of twine to take home.. oh so French!

Telephone:  021 788-3424

Initially named Tribeca after the region in New York City, the walls are adorned with scenes depicting life in the Big Apple. The name was trademarked though and they changed their name to Tribakery this year. Tribakery is a combined bakery and restaurant, with the in-store bakery part churning out delicious croissants, muffins and pastries and even the buns for their burgers! Tribakery has one of the those “come in now” smells wafting onto the streets of Kalk Bay and a display window laded with baked goods for further temptation. The shelves are also stacked with cupcakes and decadent sandwiches. You can order your cakes By the way they sell really good coffee too, and pizzas and pastas and burgers and…well more!
