South African Navy Festival 2016
The SA Navy Festival is a popular annual event and one of the highlights of the Simon’s Town and Naval calendar. The Festival takes place in the charming nautical town of Simon’s Town from 22 – 24 April and is a festival of family-fun for land lovers and sea lovers alike. It’s an opportunity to look into the world of maritime exploration and provides an insight into the organisation that keeps South African waters safe and the men and women who do protect our seas.
The SA Navy Festival is completely free and there is a range of activities over the weekend. From parades to displays and ships to submarines, bands to boat rides… this is the time to experience a real naval base first hand and it’s ideal for kids, family and anyone with an interest in anything nautical. Warships, submarines are open to the public for viewing and the kids just love the tug boat rides.
Demonstrations and displays are very popular on the events calendar: There is the Protection Force Tactical Display; a Fire Fighting Demonstration, an Anti-Piracy Display and the Lynx Helicopter Display of Air, Sea Search and Rescue! One of the most popular events will take place on Saturday evening with the 9 inch cannon firing and Night shoot – an exhibition during which a flare is discharged into the night sky and snipers try to hit it with blank bullets.
Don’t forget the flea market, food & drink stalls, the family community parade and enjoy the delights of Simon’s Town itself. See the full programme of events here
