Cape Town must rate highly as one of the World’s Most Romantic Sunset Destinations. With the perfect combination of mountain and sea, golden light and a loved one… catching the sunset in Cape Town is a magnificent sight and very romantic. The grander the sunset the more swoon-worthy the moment, because although it may be clichéd – falling in love is easy at sunset!
The South Peninsula of Cape Town has some of the most romantic sunset spots and here is our Cape Point Route selection of the best of the best!
Chapman’s Peak Drive:
Spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and a layered sandstone mountain as the backdrop, you couldn’t ask for more romantic. There are more than 60 picnic tables scattered along the dramatic drive, so bring your picnic basket and wine, dine your loved one at sunset.
As you enter the seaside town of Scarborough, turn right at the stop street and head down to the beach, which is large and uncrowded. You may bump into a few evening surfers but the view of the setting sun is brilliant and relatively secluded – just perfect for a sunset with just the 2 of you.
Hout Bay Beach:
Easily accessible and with a breathtakingly beautiful bay, you just can’t go wrong for a romantic sunset. The bay is surrounded by mountains with the distinctive Sentinel at attention as the background for your romantic selfie with the golden orb of the setting sun.
The southern slopes of Chapman’s Peak Drive frame this beach which is famed for its long white stretches of sand and striking rocks. The expansive ocean, uninterrupted sea and sun set views make this spot one of the most popular and romantic sunset spots on the Cape Point Route.
Cape Point Vineyards:
This is a drop-dead gorgeous setting with sweeping lawns, a local dam as the resident water feature, and wide vistas over the Noordhoek Valley and perfect viewing of the sunset. The Restaurant is open until 08.30pm on Wednesdays, Fridays & Saturdays. There is a fun community market on a Thursday evening – perfect for date night and a sun set.
Elsie’s Peak, Fish Hoek
A sunset option for the little more active- sweeping views of the peninsula and on a clear day you can easily see all the way to Hangklip. The route requires minimal fitness and is an easy trail with a few steep places. Return journey is approximately 2 hours. Bring a torch or headlamp for the return journey after you have rewarded your efforts with one of the best sunset views in the house.
The sun sets in the West on the ‘other-side of the mountain’ , but Kalk Bay is an excellent place to have sundowners with a loved one. The Pink sunset hues over False Bay coupled with a vast selection of romantic restaurants and bars make Kalk Bay that dreamy wonderland of love. There is a lovely walkway to Muizenberg if you are looking for a romantic stroll at sunset.
Windmill Beach, Simon’s Town
This gorgeous beach is well protected by large granite boulders. It’s the beach after Boulders Beach so you may see a penguin cruising by. Penguins mate for life and are incurable romantics so celebrate your love with a penguin sunset . Sun does not set in the sea but the colourful sky will more than make up for it .
No two sunsets are ever the same – whether it’s the clouds, the colours or the setting, each sunset is unique. Make it count this Valentine’s Day and do let us know your favourite romantic sunset spots.
