The month of October brings some of South Africa’s hottest music collaborations to the Bay Harbour Sound Stage. Cape Town’s most happening market comes alive with more food, fashion, crafts and music this summer.
Friday Nite LIVE! 4 October – Lesley Wulf and 3 Grams
Taking to the Bay Harbour Sound Stage for Friday Nite LIVE! is Cape Town’s hottest new R&B star, Lesley Wulf. A talented songwriter, Lesley has composed various original songs including ‘Supercute’, ‘Hard to survive’, ‘Pull the Cow out of the Mud’ and ‘Celebrate’ amongst others. He often performs his originals and covers including the audience favourite ‘Moves like Jagger’. Lesley teams up with 3 Grams for this performance – a musical trio which features the nephews of legendary AfroPop singer Brenda Fassie.
Saturday 5 October – David Meulen
The musical creations of David Meulen come alive on the Bay Harbour Sound on Saturday. Meulen combines the timeless melodies of The Beatles with the soul-stirring lyrics of The Lumineers. David’s passion for music can be traced back to when he discovered The Beatles at the age of six. His musical influences also include Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Ben Howard, Angus & Julia Stone, Muse, The Black Keys, The Kooks and The Arctic Monkeys.
At age 17 David started alternative rock band Dividable Grand with high school friends, and performed with the group for a couple of years. A fair amount of success followed with DG performing alongside some of the biggest acts in South Africa, including Prime Circle, aKing, Taxi Violence and many more. Using the experience gained from this, David branched out to other genres and started focusing on his solo career.
Best described as an Acoustic Rock/ Indie musician, David Meulen has been using his amazing voice and guitar skills to create music that lasts and inspires.
Sunday 6 October – Mojave Crossing
A collaboration of talent and experience that brings together the sounds of classically-trained flautist and saxophonist Heather Roth and Acid Blues Jazz guitarist James Kibby, Mojave Crossing returns to the Bay Harbour Sound Stage on Sunday. Having played with numerous bands, orchestras and performers, Heather’s musical skills as a flautist have mesmerized audiences all over the world. Together, this amazing duo offers a mix of classical, jazz and contemporary music leaving a lasting impression of melodious sounds in your mind.
Philip’s music is filled with the storytelling characteristics of folk music, but instead of lyrics and song, he takes listeners on an instrumental journey using suggestion, expression and musical themes all performed using only the six strings of his guitar. His musical influences include Tony Cox, Steve Newman, Guy Buttery, Errol Dyers, Thomas Leeb, Andy Mckee and Greg Georgiadis
Saturday 12 October – Johnny Ray Band
Performing live on Saturday is acclaimed blues-rock guitarist Johnny Ray and his band. With his gruff voice and strong guitar-playing skills, Johnny Ray’s lively Blues-Rock style is perfect for weekend relaxation. While his early influences include “speed-demons” like Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai, Johnny’s passion for the blues has seen him draw more influence from the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Rolling Stones, John Mayall and George Thorogood . This is instantly recognizable in Johnny’s playing style and repertoire.
Winding off the weekend with on Sunday is the talented and versatile vocalist, songwriter Liane Halton. Liane’s music combines technical proficiency with an emotional core.
Having completed a B.Mus. in Composition at Rhodes University, Liane moves effortlessly between contemporary rock, folk, classical and jazz music styles when writing and performing her soulful songs.
Friday Nite LIVE! 18 October – Acoustic Liquid
This band plays Flamenco guitar, mixed with tribal rhythms, deep soulful lyrics beside an array of orchestral pieces. Acoustic Liquid originals encompass a wide variety of moods all wrapped up neatly in a package that is both soothing and emotional.
Acoustic Liquid, consisting of members Westley Engelbrecht (Vocals, Acoustic Guitar and Piano) and Charles (Drums), started off as a cover band in 1998 and has since moved on to write their own music. The band is well-known for their interactions with the crowd through their music. Their music can be described as ‘sound art in motion’. Be sure to catch this lively band at the Bay Harbour Market.
Saturday 19 October – Gerry Coetzee
On Sunday Gerhard (“Gerry”) Coetzee takes to the Bay Harbour Sound Stage. Gerry captivates audiences with his virtuosity on the guitar and his soulful vocals. What you can expect to hear from this talented musician is a mix of blues, folk, rockabilly, blue-eyed soul with a guitar-driven acoustic flow. Add to this a rhythmic beat of a wooden stomp box, interspersed with an occasional harmonica solo, and you have a sound that will set your foot tapping and hands clapping. Apart from session work, Gerry has been performing regularly with Ann Jangle and The Dixie Pricks as the lead guitarist for both of these bands.
Sunday 20 October – Cascade
Bringing their powerful and utterly addictive music to the Bay Harbour Sound Stage on Sunday is the Cascade quartet led by Michael Thorn. Michael Thorn formed Cascade in 2012, bridging classical and jazz music genres by writing compositions influenced by improvisation. Cascade consists of pianist and composer Michael Thorn on piano keyboard; jazz graduate and percussionist Byron Howell on drum kit; multi-instrumentalist Max Starcke on electric bass; and performer and producer Doug Armstrong on trumpet.
Hitting the stage on 25 October for Friday Nite LIVE! is powerful jazz/funk trio Acid Blues. Consisting of founding member and super-talented jazz guitarist James Kibby, renowned funk/blues/punk bassist Maurice Paliaga and experienced session drummer Richard Pickett, this is a collaboration that is sure to impress.
Bringing their unique blues/funk/dubstep styled tunes to the Bay Harbour Sound Stage on Saturday is Cape Town’s very own Mother City Mojo. The band primarily performs original Blues tunes written by multi-instrumentalist Jamie Jupiter. The band also features Johnny Blundell on guitar and James Kaye on drums and percussion.
On Sunday Jam BONES delivers a vibrant fusion of Afrotango rhythms and beats on the Bay Harbour Sound Stage. Featuring Anthony Stroebel on Afro percussion, Gustavo Fasini on piano and accordion and Doug Armstrong on keys, beats and trumpet, their performance is not to be missed.
