Celebrate Mother’s Day in Cape Town on Sunday, 10 May 2015. Whether you’re honouring your own Mother, a mother-to-be or a maternal figure in your life, there’s no better place to spoil her than in the Mother City. Get out there and have fun with your mother in the Mother of all cities!
Explore the Mother City with your Mother. Our suggestion for Mother’s Day is the absolutely classic Vintage Sidecar Experience. One of the most unique ways to discover the Mother City with a qualified driver/guide and the 2 of you in a World War II Vintage Sidecar! Each sidecar carries the driver and 2 passengers. You and your mother will “dress-up” in cool retro biking gear (jackets, helmets, goggles) There are heaps of tour options – from full day to half day and the most popular destinations are the Cape Peninsula Tour or a Day out in Wine country with Mom! PS: Sidecar Cafe at the depot and workshop serves waffles and coffee! There are plenty of other ways to tour the Mother City. View more Cape Town Day Tours
Mother City Markets:
Most mother’s love a bit of retail therapy, hanging with their children and time. There are many many markets in the Mother City but our pick for you and your Mother this Mother’s Day is the Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay. It’s also one of those Sunday markets that is open all day, and although it looks unassuming from the outside … step through the doors into a world of art and craft, fashion, interior design, amazing food and live music. The bustling vibe makes it impossible not to have a good time with your Mother- and it’s an all weather option! Click here for more Markets in Cape Town.
It doesn’t matter whether you are a seasoned hiker looking for some inspiration or an inexperienced, but enthusiastic wanna-be! The Mother City has walks and hikes to suit you – and your mother. From easy strolls through the forest to more challenging climbs up mountains. A favourite hike for autumn is the Redhill to Kommetjie walk which forms part of the Hoerikwaggo Trail. It’s a relatively easy 12km day walk and you can stop at Kleinplaas Dam for a picnic lunch. For an added dimension to the experience, why not see if there is space to stay overnight in the Tented Camp at Slangkoppunt.
Theatre in the Mother City:
More than a theatre, the Kalk Bay Theatre is an experience and the longest running independent theatre in the Mother City. Definitely worth taking your Mother for a theatre experience – and why not book for the hilarious “Big Girls” – a musical comedy that runs from the 5 – 31 May 2015 about three totally over the top chicks holding it together when all else fails. Comedy and Cabaret for Mother’s Day – you can’t go wrong!
Mother City Cups of Tea
My family has always solved the world’s problems and individual dramas over a cup of tea with my mother. If in doubt take your mother for tea and treats in a city that has many wonderful spots for tea and high tea. Our recommendation on Mother’s Day is the Tibetan Teahouse in Simon’s Town – a place known for their “kind food for body and soul” . For a little more decadent, the delightful Casa Labia in Muizenberg is set in a Venetian Palace and does great tea and treats. See a previous blog on the Best Spots for Tea written in 2012 but staying consistent today!
But wait there is more!
Of course there are many many options for exploring the Mother City with your Mother and not just on Mothering Sunday! Try new modes of transport to explore: Take a train, walk, drive, get on a bicycle or on a bus, or a kayak or a surfboard or the back of a horse!
Book a restaurant out of your area – take an early drive and go for breakfast which is often less busy than lunch on special days, you will have time to explore after your meal.
When last did you visit some of Cape Town’s Top attractions? Cape Point or Boulders Beach to see the penguins. We love exploring any lesser known street or village. In spite of living, working and playing here, this city continually surprises and delights us locals – so get out there and discover something new for you or ask us for some advice!
