Hiking for Heritage Day

Heritage Day is a South African public holiday celebrated on 24 September. On this day, South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people.

Hiking is one of the best ways to explore the Cape’s natural and cultural heritage. Get those boots on, spring is a beautiful time of year to hike Table Mountain National Park. There are countless day hikes on this natural wonder of the world, but to really experience the heritage properly we recommend the Hoerikwaggo Trail – overnight tented accommodation and guided trail hiking.

The Hoerikwaggo overnight hikes allows you to explore the Table Mountain National Park in the best way possible including fynbos-lined paths, awesome views, interesting animals and plant life and  at least one night’s accommodation in a unique tented camp.
The entire trail traverses 75km through the world heritage site of Table Mountain National Park – travelling in the footsteps of the Cape’s ancestors and experiencing the beauty of the Hoerikwaggo – the ‘mountain in the sea’.
Each tented camp sleeps 12 hikers in 2-sleeper or 4-sleeper permanent tents. See details of 3 hiking sections below (2 sections of the trail have been closed until further notice due to the wildfires of March 2015)

Cape Point to Smitswinkel Overnight Hiking Trail (15km)

A 15km (5/6 hours) guided hike from Cape Point Lighthouse to the entrance to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve as part of the Hoerikwaggo Trail, where you will overnight at  Smitswinkel Tented Camp. Experience panoramic views of both False Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Shipwreck, Ostriches, Reptiles, Fynbos and more…

Red Hill to Slangkop Overnight Hiking Trail (12km)

A 12 km (4/ 5 hours) guided hike from  Simon’s Town to Kommetjie where you will overnight at Slangkop Tented Camp nestled between the indegenous protected Milkwood Forest.  This hike forms part of the Hoerikwaggo Trail. Expereince panoramic views of both Fals Bay and the Atlantic Ocean,  wide open spaces, Fynbos treasures and more…

A 9.5 km ( 5 / 6 hours) guided hike from Hout Bay  to the foot of Table Mountain where you will overnight at the Platteklip Wash Houses overlooking Cape Town City. This hike forms part of the Hoerikwaggo Trail. Experience Afromontane Forests, Fynbos delights, panoramic views, historica landmarks, Dams, Rock Pools, Fauna & Flora and more….

Distance:     9.5 km (+/-  5/6 hours walk)
