Cape Town comes to a standstill when the largest timed cycle race in the world hits the Mother City on 10 March 2013. The Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour –affectionately known as “the Argus” started in 1978 with a few hundred riders (to raise awareness about the lack of bike paths in South Africa) but has grown to a capacity of 35,000 cyclists!
Cyclists are seeded into groups with the professionals starting next to the Cape Town Civic Centre at 6am on race day- 10 March 2013, with groups of riders following in timed slots. The route is 110kmn long and takes the cyclists on a spectacular bike journey that runs the length of the Cape Peninsula – through the villages of Muizenberg, St James, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town on the False Bay coastline, then returning north on the Atlantic Coastline through Scarborough, Kommetjie, Noordhoek, over Chapman’s Peak Drive, through Hout Bay and ending at Cape Town Stadium in Greenpoint.

For most cyclists the race is non-competitive and Capetonians come out in droves to support the athletes. Road closure information and best spots to watch will follow closer to Argus Race Day on 10 March 2013.
For visiting cyclists we recommend ensuring that you book your accommodation early. Consider staying in the south peninsula – especially if you are coming with friends or family who are not cycling the race.
If you are visiting Cape Town and not involved in the race at all – please be aware of road closure ESPECIALLY if you are trying to get to the airport! We suggest you stay an extra day and enjoy the festivities of one of Cape Town’s great events.
Getting to and from the start if you are staying Cape Town’s South Peninsula:
By car: There is north bound access to the start in the early morning and south bound access by the evening, however parking near the start can be tricky. If you plan to hire a car – remember to BOOK early! There is a big demand for car hire in Cape Town that weekend! Book your car here.
Catch the train: Metrorail from Simon’s Town to Cape Town runs their normal Sunday service with an extra train leaving from Fish Hoek (time to be confirmed for 2013). Tickets for cyclists with their bikes cost R40. The start is adjacent to Cape Town Train Station and the finish a mere 3km away, when you are ready to get home!
Transfer Services: Contact us to pre-book your transfer to or from the start and finish of the race as you won’t get a cab to the start on Argus Race Day.
Accommodation that still has availability at the time of being published!
Many of these properties have viewing right from the property so a fabulous option if friends and family are spectators – they won’t have to leave the house to see you ride past the front door!
