The Bustling craft markets, historical architecture and beautiful gardens of the city centre make it the perfect location for an Amazing race exploring the cultural heart of Cape Town completing a number of quantifiable team challenges en route - all on foot.
THE CONCEPT
The group will be split into teams. They will be given an overview of what the challenges will involve in order to be prepared for the days activities. Each team will be given a race kit containing directions to the checkpoints, the tasks that they need to complete and an explanation of point scoring system. They will receive a kitty and a map of the City Bowl.
THE ACTION
Time Pressure
The teams will need to choose which challenges they are going to complete in the allocated time. They will not have enough time to complete all the tasks so careful strategy will be required to maximize their points by either completing the most tasks or the ones with the highest point rating
The Main Challenge
The main challenge will be to solve a crossword. They will do this by solving clues en route around the city centre or receiving a letter of the crossword after successfully completing each task. Once they have all the letters they will have an anagram which they will need to unscramble for maximum points
Budgeting challenge
Each team will receive a kitty. This will be used for transport in minibus taxis, entrance fees, haggling for curios or flowers. At the end of the challenge the Team that has budgeted best and returns with the most money will receive maximum points for this challenge. This will also affect which challenges the teams choose to complete.
Market trader Challenge
Teams will be allocated a trader on Greenmarket square. They will need to sell as many of the traders wares as possible in a set time frame. The team that earns the most profit for the trader will earn maximum points as well as increasing the traders profit. Creative thinking and an entrepreneurial spirit will be required for this activity.
Social Responsibility Challenge
The Teams will need to perform a song, dance or entertainment of some sort in front of an audience at an old age home in Woodstock. The Audience will then give them a score out of 10. This will translate into maximum points for their team. They will also make a donation to the Home- separate from the kitty.
Living History Challenge
The teams will visit a number of historical sites around the city but will then be tested on the relevance of that point. Interrogating the locals, common sense and some good sleuthing skills will be required to complete this task.
Team Dynamics
For certain activities the team will be allowed to split into two groups. This will have implications for their budget but will allow them to complete more challenges albeit at half strength. Successfully mastering these team dynamics will maximize points for the team.
Other Challenges
Malay food tasting, learning a Gumboot dance, visiting cultural museums, finding clues in the dungeons of the castle, Solving Brain Teasers and completing artistic sketches will all add to the fun of the event.
The Checkpoints
These will include the Company Gardens, the Castle, St Georges Mall, Green Market Square, Woodstock Old Age Home, District 6 Museum, The Taj Hotel, Twankey Bar, Bo Kaap, The Slave Lodge, Noon Day Gun and many others
