You lie back in your sleeping bag on a wonderfully comfy bed and, if you leave the tent flap open, watch drowsily as the rhythmic beam of the Slangkop lighthouse displays hypnotically across the solid canvas walls.
Then you drift off into sleep to the never-ending accompaniment of the booming but also incredibly soothing symphony of waves breaking on the Kommetjie shoreline just 100m away.
This is life in the Slangkop tented camp in Kommetjie, the latest addition to the Hoerikwaggo hiking trail being developed between Cape Point and Table Mountain.
Accommodation
The "tents" are permanent structures, with canvas interiors covered by a completely weatherproof sheeted roof. It's also themed to fit snugly into its environment, with its low, rounded design complementing the low, undulating coastal thicket vegetation of the Kommetjie area.
Slangkop, like all the camps, is designed on a "touch the Earth lightly" philosophy, with fully environmentally-friendly facilities. Restoration of the indigenous coastal milkwood forests in Kommetjie is an integral part of the camp, with the current exotic manitoka trees earmarked for gradual removal as the newly planted local vegetation becomes established.
One of the camp's special features is the innovative light fittings in the main communal kitchen area, fashioned from the vertebrae of a southern right whale that washed up dead on the shore directly opposite the site some years ago.
Amenities
There is safe and secure parking at the camp, as well as a large deck with undercover barbecue facilities and breathtaking views. There is a large fully equipped kitchen for campers to use as they please, and neat, clean, outdoor showers and toilets.
