Muizenberg was initially a cattle farm and later became a military outpost, under Sergeant Muis and became known as Fort Muys. The Railway Line was extended to Muizenberg in 1822 which was followed by an increase in building in the Muizenberg area. The British defeated the Dutch in 1795 in the Battle of Muizenberg and the Cape became a British Colony.  After the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886, the gold magnates started to build their holiday houses in Muizenberg and Muizenberg became a fashionable resort.

The first pavilion was built in Muizenberg in 1911 and that same year Muizenberg became the site of the first official South African airmail which was flown from Kenilworth. Magnificent homes were built along Beach and Royal Roads in Muizenberg, among them many homes designed by Herbert Baker. Muizenberg Railway starion is a magnificent Edwardian building with an impressive clock tower and was opened in 1913. In 1920 Boyes Drive was completed, and in 1929 a new pavilion was opened, which included a theatre seating nine hundred people.
